The Future is Here – with Internal Body Drones

Technology in the field of medicine is fast-advancing just much like in any other fields, and interestingly, we may already be seeing a form of an internal body drone. Although no one has seemed to term it as such, but one interesting technology in medicine these days is the use of a swallowable camera pill that allows doctors to see the insides of the body.

This swallowable camera pill works very much like autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, used in real estate photography or in film-making, only this one goes inside the body.

Recently, it was reported that the FDA has approved a form of the camera pill. This one, made by Given Imaging, is called the PillCam Colon. The disposable camera costs $500, which is far cheaper than a single colonoscopy, and it’s a heck of a lot less intrusive than a colonoscopy. A win-win if there ever was one. The capsule has two different color video cameras attached to it, one on each end. Your insides get illuminated by a tiny LED light bulb, and the 12mm by 33mm capsule is battery-powered. Imagine a very small pill that you can easily swallow just like any other medicine, yet this one can take photos of how your intestine looks like in a period of about 8 to 10 hours.

An article in Daily Tech reported that ingestible capsule cameras have been around for a little over a decade now. But while these probes have been authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for inspection of a wide range of other parts of the digestive track — including the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine — they still weren’t technically authorized to image the large intestine – until the approval for Given Imaging’s PillCam.

The article also says that in there are a number of other pillcameras that have been developed by other institutes; in fact, Given Imaging has also developed two other kinds of pill cameras, for the small instestine, and the esophagus,  yet the FDA so far has approved the use of its PillCam Colon.

Perhaps what we can say is the future is already in the here-and-now, when humanity will become capable of surpassing the upper limit on intelligence that has held since the rise of the human species.
Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence
This concept of Technological Singularity was presented in the first Singularity Summit by a panel of  futurist scientists at the Stanford University in 2006, led by Ray Kurzweil, the progenitor of the Singularity, who reprised his (recent) 672-page book, The Singularity Is Near : When Humans Transcend Biology.
An excerpt from his book reads thus, “In this new world, there will be no clear distinction between human and machine, real reality and virtual reality. We will be able to assume different bodies and take on a range of personae at will. In practical terms, human aging and illness will be reversed; pollution will be stopped; world hunger and poverty will be solved. Nanotechnology will make it possible to create virtually any physical product using inexpensive information processes and will ultimately turn even death into a soluble problem.” Read more here

What is this Singularity of Ray Kurzweil?
According to Kurweil, the singularity will be achieved at the time when the exponential growth of the power of computers and technology hits such a speed that it fundamentally changes the world, and humans’ role in it. Kurzweil predicts that with the right protection services like zero trust access, we will be neurologically hooked up to computers in the not too distant future, and that technology will do more good than harm. A much simpler definition for Singularity is provided by Singularity Symposium: The everyday English definition of Singularity is a noun that designates the quality of being one of a kind, strange, unique, remarkable or unusual. However, specifically, singularity is a point where all parallel lines meet; a point where a measured variable reaches unmeasurable or infinite value. Another meaning is in terms of physics,  a point or region in space time in which gravitational forces cause matter to have an infinite density; associated with Black Holes.

Drones, for one, are a product of that awesome combination of human intelligence and artificial intelligence. Specifically these internal body drones, pill cameras that are constantly being innovated, are one of a kind, unique products of focused minds, singular in their pursuit of better solutions for humanity’s ills, exceeding our imagination.
