2020 will be remembered as the year when drones — generally thought of as merely for hobbyists and distrusted by some – came into the public’s consciousness as indispensable tools especially in times of crisis, such as the current Covid-19 pandemic.

At the height of the lockdowns around the globe, drones for delivery made waves, still do, and will continue to shape our world in the future.

The need to for social distancing as a safety health protocol made the delivery of essential goods and medicines via drones a prioritized, in-demand function of these autonomous unmanned vehicles.

At the same time, it is seen to influence the supply chain industry long past Covid-19. As Michael Zahra, CEO of Drone Delivery Canada, said: “It’s really an industry that’s just starting. Certainly, COVID-19 has raised the profile. When it’s over, some companies are going to look at drone logistics as a back-up business continuity system.”

Back in April, the world saw its first drone delivery service. In what’s being billed as a “world first,” startup Manna Aero has begun a drone delivery service in Moneygall, Ireland. Delivering medicine to vulnerable people locked in their homes.

The World Economic Forum touted this year as the golden age of drone delivery, noting in an article that:

  • Drones have become an important tool in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to create more resilient supply chains and socially distanced delivery services.
  • The crisis is driving innovation in drone policy as society has started to recognize that the utility of drones outweighs potential risks.
  • Fully integrating drones into supply chains will require collaboration and drive.
