The commercial drone industry in the US is ready to fly high, yet it cannot go full speed, as there are still many things to iron out legally; privacy and safety concerns still hound many as well.
Because of the foreseen delay in FAA’s final rules concerning the commercial use of drones, two US lawmakers have come up with a proposed legislation to “bridge the gap until final FAA regulations take effect.” In its report, Lexology said:
Because of this delay, U.S. Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and John Hoeven, R-N.D., introduced the Commercial UAS Modernization Act, which would help to bridge the gap until final FAA regulations take effect. in its current form, the proposed legislation would impose additional, immediate requirements upon those who want to use and test drones for commercial purposes, such as establishing interim guidelines that they must follow. it also sets up a reasonable framework for registration and use of UAS for commercial purposes.2
“There is so much potential that can be unlocked if we lay the proper framework to support innovation in unmanned aircraft systems,” Sen. Booker said in a statement. “But right now, the U.S. is falling behind other countries because we lack rules for the safe operation of commercial [unmanned aircraft systems] technology. The Commercial UAS Modernization Act sets up clear and immediate rules of the road, helping to lay a foundation that will allow us to make cutting-edge progress in a rapidly emerging field.” – Read more at:
Here are some specifics of the Commercial UAS Modernization Act:
- Creates an interim rule for commercial use and testing of small UAS while the FAA finalizes rules covering commercial UAS.
- Builds a framework for the registration and use of UAS for commercial purposes.
- Strengthens the FAA’s oversight authority by creating a new position, the Deputy Associate Administrator for Unmanned Aircraft and by streamlining regulations.
- Ensures that FAA test sites are being used to the maximum extent to facilitate research into new technologies, in partnership with industry and other relevant government entities.
