Yet, drones may have gotten bad publicity courtesy of the latest ad of a popular car maker. Audi’s ad for its new Audi 6, is entitled “The Drones” and as it says in its description that goes with the video posted on Youtube: Hi-tech advancements like drones are becoming frighteningly common. But Audi wants to remind us that technology doesn’t have to be scary. Inspired by Hitchcock’s The Birds, Audi shows how the available advanced technology in the new Audi A6 is the opposite of intimidating.

Indeed, the ad unnecesarily add to the paranoia some have regarding the otherwise friendly, life-enhancing, commercially-useful small unmanned aerial vehicles. It is rather unfair to promote one’s technology and engineering feat to the detriment of another, and the ad is a “low blow,” as one online commentator quipped. Another online comment goes “Multirotors have already been so negatively affected by uneducated and unintelligent alarmists for the past few years. This is the last thing that the industry needed. This perpetuates a false image of advancing technology and actually promotes it. That is something that a car manufacturer should never want to do.”

Aerial photographers including those in the real estate marketing are promoting the unique, amazing use of drones for aerial photo services.

The Droneologist, adhering to the principle of seeing the good in the bad, thinks this negative publicity will in fact generate more interest in drones, as well as inspire the drone community to continue promoting, innovating and advancing drone technology. Most importantly, The Droneologist is a strong advocate of safe responsible drone piloting.
