Oh, For the Love of Drones

These days as hobby drones have become more popular, anyone who is into it can easily buy one for less than $500, such as the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0, or even as low as $130 for a beginner’s Walkera QR Infra X Smart Drone.

Yet for the more serious enthusiasts, professional drones can cost one almost an arm or a leg, such as a DJI Phantom. Thus, some would literally save their precious dear flying gadget from crashing into the water at the expense of both their limbs, oh, for the love of drones.

That was what one man did according to this story from NewYork Daily News.com.

“A desperate drone owner ran fully clothed into a lake after his expensive gadget ran out of juice and plunged toward the water. Hilarious footage shows the Canadian, who has not been identified, suddenly realizing his costly DJI Phantom 2 is about to take an impromptu bath. Ditching his wallet and cellphone on the shore, he leaps through the liquid as the $999 machine falls.”

In fact, stories of how drone pilots/users – hobbyists or military – react when they lose their drones to crashes, malfunctions and the like abound, and they can either send the uninitiated observer, or an avid fan to fits of hysteria, or even more fear.

Military drones have slammed into homes, farms, runways, highways, waterways and, in one case, an Air Force C-130 Hercules transport plane in midair. No one has died in a drone accident, but the documents show that many catastrophes have been narrowly averted, often by a few feet, or a few seconds, or pure luck.

Also according to Washington Post, there is a lot of human drama when they crash. Drone pilots and other crew members swear, scream and yell at their remote-control video screens when the aircraft fly out of control. Those moments are often captured by audio recorders in ground control stations.

“Drone just pitched up. Drone’s pitching over. Drone is uh, crashed and destructed, at uh, the end of the runway.”
“We’re in the soup here. . . . Dude, uh, we’re not sure what the aircraft is doing. . . . Yeah, we crashed.”
“Stop saying ‘uh-oh’ while you’re flying. It’s never good. Like going to the dentist or a doctor. . . ‘Oops? What the f— you mean ‘Oops?’ “
“Holy crap, this is really spinning.”
